PIPELINE ENGINEERING (PE – IV) B.Tech. IV Year I Sem. JNTUH R-18

Unit I: Elements of Pipeline Design

  • Identify and differentiate between various types of piping systems (transmission lines, in-plant piping, distribution mains, service lines).

  • Analyze different types of water distribution networks (serial, branched, looped) and their components.

  • Understand basic hydraulic principles like continuity and energy principle and apply them in network analysis.

  • Explain the key factors and guidelines for pipeline route selection, survey, and geotechnical design.

Unit II: Frictional Head Loss and Flow Analysis

  • Differentiate between major and minor head losses in pipes and utilize the Moody diagram for friction coefficient calculations.

  • Apply empirical formulae and solve simple pipe flow problems involving equivalent pipes (series, parallel, series-parallel).

  • Understand the phenomenon of water hammer and its impact on energy transmission through pipes in case of sudden closures.

  • Analyze the characteristics of pumps (head-discharge curves, pump combinations) and valves (check valves, flow control valves, pressure reducing valves).

Unit III: Reservoirs, Pumps, and Valves in Network Analysis

  • Explain the importance of reservoirs in pipeline systems and differentiate between various types.

  • Analyze network parameters like flow, pressure, and head, and understand their interrelationships.

  • Explain the necessity of various types of network analysis and typical assumptions made during analysis.

  • Formulate network equations for single-source and multi-source networks with known and unknown pipe resistances.

  • Include the effects of pumps, check valves, flow control valves, and pressure reducing valves in network equations and solve related problems.

Unit IV: Hardy Cross Method and Software Tools

  • Understand the principles behind the Hardy Cross Method for balancing heads (loop method) and balancing flows (node method).

  • Apply the modified Hardy Cross method and address the issue of convergence in network analysis.

  • Discuss different software tools available for water distribution network analysis and design.

Unit V: Materials Selection, Construction, and Operations

  • Analyze the key elements of pipeline design and understand material designation standards and quality management practices.

  • Discuss different pipeline construction methods and commissioning procedures.

  • Explain various pipeline protection methods like coating, cathodic protection (including calculations), and internal corrosion mitigation strategies.

  • Analyze the role of flow meters, sensors, and pigs in pipeline operations and maintenance.
